If you read the “About Immaculate Conception” page before reading this one, you have learned what to expect from me, Angela Baker, as a writer. But this “About” page is about me as a person.
I originate from a small town in Illinois. I lived in the Midwest for 28 years of my life, despising each winter and wondering if there was a better place to call home that would accommodate my desire for a more consistent climate. I found that almost 2 years ago when my husband, daughter and I moved to sunny St George, Utah. Although summers can be dreaded (120° F is hot, I don’t care what people say about a dry heat!), I love the fact it RARELY snows here…a much loved change from the long, cold winters in Illinois.
I earned my Master’s degree and became a mental health therapist, working in various places, such as a Behavioral Health Unit of a hospital and several residential facilities for troubled youth. I enjoy(ed) being a therapist, but when life through me some lemons, I made some lemonade.
In November 2007, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Not quite the plans this headstrong, motivated, independent person had for her life, but what do you do? Well, after much deliberation, I decided to turn to my other love – writing.
Being a freelance writer has afforded me the opportunity to work with my MS. I don’t have to worry about not being able to get to sleep at a certain time. Other than getting up with my daughter to get her off to school, I don’t need to be awake at a certain time to get to a job. My talent as a writer has been a blessing. I always knew I was a great writer, but hadn’t thought about making a full-time career until these last few months.
So, although the above can only give you a snapshot of me, it briefly comprises my life as of late. I continue to learn new things each day through my life as a writer, my life as a person with MS, and my life as Angela Baker, and everything I was, am, and will be.
